Walk us through a typical week in your position at IWC EC Headquarters?
Leyla & Alfiya:
As a membership secretary, our job is to be the 1st point of contact with all members. We greet them, get to know a little about them so we can assist them throughout the year, give them their badges, organize their Metro supermarket cards and make sure they feel welcome in the club. Needless to say the person taking over must be very sociable!

Usually the busiest times for us are during the May GM, over the summer where we prepare for the 1st GM of the year in September and the 1st 2 GMs. The rest of the year we receive some more memberships but must we mostly make sure emails are answered, requests are followed up on and communication is flowing with the rest of the EC regarding memberships. We try and make it to weekly activities to connect with members as much as possible.

What big thing are you currently working on?
Leyla & Alfiya:
We usually have a new member’s welcome coffee morning in September but we have had so many new members join in the past few months that we are trying to organize 1 more. So if you’re new or feel new, come along!

Why Is this position available?
Leyla & Alfiya:
We have truly enjoyed our time within the EC and would love to give other people the opportunity to appreciate all this position has to offer. It is our passion to get to know people from different cultures and ways of life and to assist them in adjusting to the city and their new life in SP. Unfortunately, we both have personal family projects that we need to focus on now.

What will be the biggest challenge for the person(s) filling this position?
Leyla & Alfiya:
Maybe the fact that you can’t really devote a structured time to memberships. Sometimes you receive 10 requests at once and there are weeks where it’s quiet and there’s not much to do. However, when you like connecting with people, it doesn’t really feel like a job!

Tell us exactly what would be expected for someone who would like to take on this position?
Leyla & Alfiya:
You just need to be organized because there is a lot of information for each member (Excel skills would be an advantage). You need to keep track of when each member joins and in which stage of the membership process they are. You also need to work closely with the treasurer to make your numbers match (she’s the real boss but shhh, don’t tell the co-presidents that). Other than that you just need to like to meet and greet new people; great for social life!

What would other EC members say is the best part about working on the EC team?
Leyla & Alfiya:
The team!!! We created a super team and we enjoy our monthly meetings and outings! It really is a fun group of interesting, intelligent ladies each bringing a little of their international knowledge to the table.
